This article examines the origin and historical evolution of Horus, one of the most significant deities in ancient Egyptian religion, through an interdisciplinary analysis of archaeological, textual, historical, and theological evidence. It argues that Horus originated as a Predynastic falcon deity associated with the royal centre of Nekhen before gradually developing into the supreme divine embodiment of kingship, cosmic order, and political legitimacy. The study traces the transformation of Horus from a regional tutelary god into a national deity whose identity became inseparable from the institution of the Egyptian pharaoh. Particular attention is devoted to the integration of Horus into the Osirian mythological cycle, his complex relationship with Isis, Osiris, and Set, the theological significance of the Eye of Horus, and the emergence of multiple manifestations such as Horus the Elder, Horus the Child, and Ra-Horakhty. The article further explores the symbolic and ideological functions of Horus within Egyptian concepts of ma’at, divine kingship, resurrection, and cosmic harmony, demonstrating how religious traditions evolved in response to political and cultural transformations from the Predynastic Period to the Ptolemaic and Roman eras. Employing evidence from temple inscriptions, funerary literature, royal iconography, archaeological discoveries, and modern Egyptological scholarship, the study contends that Horus should not be understood merely as a mythological figure but as a dynamic theological principle that unified religion, monarchy, cosmology, and state ideology. Ultimately, the article concludes that the enduring prominence of Horus reflects the remarkable continuity and intellectual sophistication of ancient Egyptian religious thought, offering valuable insights into the development of one of the world’s oldest and most influential civilisations.
